Best hops for a New Zealand pilsner

Data sheet

The hops that define a New Zealand pilsner, the numbers behind them, and the strain that completes the recipe.

Use Motueka and Riwaka. For a New Zealand pilsner these are the strongest match on aroma and bitterness.

Why these hops

Recommended hopsMotueka and Riwaka

Riwaka alpha / myrcene4.5 to 6.5 % alpha, 65 to 70 % myrcene

Notes

A New Zealand pilsner keeps a clean lager base but swaps noble hops for zesty New Zealand aroma: Motueka for lemon-lime and a touch of Riwaka for grapefruit-passion-fruit lift.

It is still a pilsner, so keep the malt lean and the bitterness crisp; over-hop it and you have a hazy pale in disguise rather than a lager.
